Feast of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton! It is the ending of the bicentennial for when she came to Emmitsburg and started her community and the beginning of the bicentennial celebration for her school. Mother Seton has had a lasting impact on Catholic education in the United States.

These days when the cost of tuition has made a Catholic education unavailable to so many children--I wonder what Mother Seton would do to again make Catholic education an option for all children.

As a Daughter of Charity and a teacher it grieves me greatly that those who live in poverty are basically excluded from getting a Catholic education. Sure there are scholarships or grants for some, but for the majority it is not a possibility. Education is such a great tool for escaping poverty!

I pray that through the intercession of Elizabeth Ann Seton by Catholics, Catholic educators, and all supporters of Catholic schools that what she made possible in her day we can do today. You can read more about her life here.

Have a blessed new year full of great possibilities! May you believe that God is with you each moment--even in the hard times!
